Cancer

Cancer is the single name assigned to more than 100 different types of diseases due to out-of-control cell growth in the body. Each disease is classified by the type of cell that is initially affected.

Facts About Cancer

  • Cancer can attack anyone.
  • Cancer is the second killer in developed countries and first in underdeveloped countries.
  • Only a very small percentage of cancers (between 5-10%) have a genetic link.
  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the numbers of new cancer cases is expected to rise by about 70% over the next 20 years.

Bone Marrow Transplant

Bone marrow transplant is among the greatest success stories in cancer treatment. It has boosted survival rates from nearly zero to more than 85% in various types of blood cancers. Newer options such as stem cell therapy, reduced-intensity transplants, haploidentical transplants, and cord blood transplants have made transplants available to many more people who need this potentially life-saving treatment.

Generally, patient’s family members are preferred to be bone marrow donors because HLA-type is inherited and match in the same ancestry. However, only 30 to 40% of patients have a compatible donor

Heart

The heart is an important well-developed organ in the circulatory system, which is located behind but slightly to the left side of breastbone. This system consists of a network of blood vessels such as arteries, veins and capillaries.

Circulatory System has 3 main Functions:

  • transport of nutrients
  • carrying oxygen and hormones to cells throughout the body
  • removal of metabolic wastes (carbon dioxide, nitrogenous wastes)

Heart failure means heart muscles are weak, unable to pump adequate blood and oxygen. It is a persistent, progressive condition that can’t be cured.

A heart attack happens when the flow of oxygen-rich blood to a section of heart muscle suddenly becomes blocked and the heart can’t get oxygen. Medicines, devices such as artificial pumps implanted in the chest to control heart rhythm and heart surgery are the main treatments.

Kidney

The kidneys are two bean-shaped vital organs, located just below the rib cage, one on each side of the spine. Millions of tiny nephrons present in kidneys filter blood regularly and generate urine, extract wastes and unproductive fluid. Kidney also generate a hormone that alarms the body when to produce more red blood cells.

Some people don’t have healthy kidneys by birth and sometimes their kidneys stop working. Most kidney diseases attack nephrons causing them to lose their filtering capacity. Nephrons can be damaged swiftly or slowly and silently due to kidney diseases which affects both kidneys simultaneously.

A person with damaged kidney needs to go on medication and take help of a special machine that acts like a kidney to wash and clean the blood. This is called dialysis. However kidney transplant is required in case of renal failure for long term solution. This means that a patient get a kidney transplanted in the hospital which is donated by another person, often a family member.
